What is the meaning of gold-plated silver? What Karatage of gold do you use to plate silver?
Gold-plated silver refers to a jewelry piece made from pure sterling silver (usually 925 silver) that is coated with a thin layer of real gold on the surface. This combines the affordability and strength of silver with the luxurious appearance of gold.
At Iryssa, we use 18-karat gold for plating — striking the perfect balance between a rich golden hue and durability.
What is the meaning of 2-micron gold plating on silver?
A micron is a unit of thickness. So when we say 2-micron, it means the gold layer on the silver is 2microns thick.
The higher the micron, the longer the gold layer lasts and the more premium the finish.
At Iryssa, we use 2 micron plating for durability and rich color. A lot of gold plated jewellery in the market is actually “Flash plating”. Do not fall for that.
Flash plating is a quick, inexpensive layer of gold used mainly for aesthetic appeal and occasional wear.
2 micron plating offers a much thicker, more durable coating, ideal for jewelry that’s meant to last and retain its look over time.
Will this plating come off if I wear it every day? How long will it last?
Gold plating will naturally wear off over time, especially with daily use, sweat, water, perfumes, or rough handling.
But with 2 micron plating, it can last one to a few years, depending on care and wear.
The good news? It can be re-plated anytime to restore the finish. We offer re-polishing service too .
If I keep the jewelry in a drawer or locker and don’t use it, will it tarnish?
925 silver can oxidize over time, especially if exposed to humidity or air.
But if you store it in an airtight zip pouch with an anti-tarnish cloth (which we send with the product), it will stay fresh and shiny for much longer.
We recommend storing each piece separately to avoid scratches or dullness.
What kind of gemstones do you use?
At Iryssa, we use a mix of:
-
Natural semi-precious stones (like amethyst, citrine, topaz, rose quartz)
-
Hydro stones (lab-grown with excellent clarity and color)
-
Lab grown diamonds for sparkle and precision
Every stone is hand-picked for brilliance and harmony with the design.
How do I take care of my jewelry?
To keep your jewelry glowing:
-
Avoid contact with water, perfumes, and harsh chemicals
-
Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wear
-
Store separately in a pouch or box to prevent scratches and tarnish
Treat your jewelry like the little treasure it is — and it will love you back!
Should I just not buy brass with gold plating instead of silver? Isn’t it cheaper?
Yes, brass with gold plating is cheaper, but there are key differences:
Feature |
Brass |
925 Silver |
Base metal |
Alloy (can cause allergies) |
Pure silver (hypoallergenic) |
Longevity |
Tends to tarnish faster |
Lasts longer, can be re-polished |
Value |
Low resale value |
Has intrinsic silver value |
Feel & Finish |
May feel lighter, less premium |
Heavier, finer, more luxurious |
So while brass is more affordable, 925 silver is a long-term, skin-safe investment — especially for meaningful or gifting pieces.
